More than 50 private jets landed in Montenegro last week mainly from Serbia, Russia and Belarus, exploiting an exemption to a ban on citizens from these countries from entering the Adriatic country due to fears of the spread of COVID-19, according to BIRN findings.

Citizens of Serbia, Russia and a number of other countries are banned from entering Montenegro due to COVID-19 restrictions. Unless they can afford to fly by private jet, regardless of the risk. .

Since May 25, when Montenegro’s government declared the country “corona free”, small aircraft with a maximum of 10 seats have been allowed to land regardless of whether or not they are carrying people from countries whose citizens are banned from entry.

Only since June 12 have those arriving by private jet been required to produce a negative PCR test not more than 48 hours old. Prior to this, they faced no restrictions on arrival.

Critics say the flights represent an epidemiological ‘blind spot’ and a blatant case of double standards privileging those with the means to fly VIP.
